Bentham - Baltic State Flax Seals
The purpose of this page.
There is only one true Riga Crossed Keys Seal and the ones
found at Bentham are true to type. The UK is littered with
seals which imitate the Riga seal in an attempt to cash in
on its quality. Riga seals have a St George cross between
the bits. The bits are large with internal crosses. The
bows are always round and large. There is a number, 1, 2 or
3 between the bows which indicates the grade number of the
flax.
Crossed Keys Flax Bale Seals
found at Bentham Mills
(Updated
June 2022 for the Lancaster Maritime Museum)
There are many kinds of crossed keys bale seals. However all
of those found at Bentham have the + of the Riga City Arms suggesting Riga was a major
source of all the other flax seals found here at Bentham. There are many
other cross key flax seals which try to suggest they have the
quality of the Riga flax but they usually have a Saltire x,
not a +. These are late 18th to late 19th century. see
http://www.peacehavens.co.uk/BSXKEYS.htm which describes
all the different kinds of crossed seals in detail. #
